19 September 2010, Rote Island –East Indonesia: In an exciting finale to five days of highly competitive surfing at Boa Beach on the far-flung East Indonesian island of Rote, history was made in the Rote Open 2010 presented by Billabong as Dedi Santosa from Bali won his first international surfing competition in a man-on-man 25 minute final over Devis Ratif to earn a whopping $3,000 USD, and Putra Hermawan from Nusa Lembongan claimed his first Coca-Cola ISC Tour victory over reigning points leader Pepen Hendrik to nab a worthy $2,750 USD and 3,500 championship points in the ISC Open Division.
Santosa was overjoyed with his win, saying, “Winning this event is the best thing that ever happened to me. I almost can’t believe it. There were so many good surfers in this International division, it was so competitive, and so I feel so lucky that I got some good waves in the final. The conditions were tricky, and Devis is a smart competitor, so I’m lucky I found the good waves and he didn’t.” When asked what the first thing he will do with his newfound wealth he answered, “I’m going to buy a couple of new surfboards!”
22 surfers from Australia, America, Italy, and Indonesia competed in the International Division for a total prize purse of almost $10,000 USD.
Putra Hermawan was all smiles as he was carried up onto the beach on the shoulders of his friends, very excited about his first ISC Open Division win. He is one of the youngest competitors on the Tour at 18 years old, but has a history of winning in the Junior and Pro Junior Divisions. He was up against the current rankings leader veteran 33 year old Pepen Hendrik in the 25-minute man-on-man final.
Back on the beach Hermawan had this to say, “Wow, this feels so good, I’m so stoked! I was pretty nervous going into this final with Pepen, as he is the rankings leader and an awesome surfer. But I got a good first wave and saw that he was having trouble with his waves, so I started feeling a little more confident.”
“Then I got that 7 point wave and knew I had a good chance to win. I just had to keep focused. Pepen is such a great competitor but also a good sport too…at the end he was happy for me that I won, and waited to congratulate me. Wow, my first ISC Open win….I’m so happy right now,” he added. Hermawan has now moved up to fourth in the ISC Open rankings.
Pepen Hendrik was also smiling and satisfied with his second place finish. He said, “It’s great to see Putra get this win, and my first place ranking is still safe, so it’s all good in the end. I just couldn’t get a really good wave out there that would get me any big points. But Rote is a great place, I won a comp here back in 2002, so I really enjoy my time here.”
53 Indonesian surfers competed in the ISC Open Division.
In addition to the International and ISC Open Divisions, there were also the finals of the ISC Masters Division, the ISC Women’s Division, and a special Rote Local Division.
Taking home the first place trophy in the ISC Masters (over 35 years of age) was Ketut “Kombong” Juliarta, besting fellow Balinese surfer legends Wayan Widiartha and Made Lana and Javanese legend Arya Subyakto.
In the ISC Women’s Division, Yasniar “Bonne” Gea from Nias took the top spot, followed by Nyoman Satri from Bali, Diah Rahayu Dewi from Bali, and Yuki Ifrika from Sumatra.
In the Rote Local Division it was Dani Killi that drew the best scores from the judges and also the biggest cheers from the crowd, obviously the favorite. He took the win over Adrianus Lenggu, Mus Eli, and Yermi Bullu. It was also obvious that the local Rote surfer’s skills have vastly improved over the last year since the Rote Open 2009, which is great to see.
After 5 days of exciting and highly competitive surfing, the Rote Open 2010 presented by Billabong was closed in a Sunday afternoon ceremony at the event location of Boa Beach with hundreds of locals, government officials, event organizers, and competitors in attendance.
In his opening speech at the start of the ceremony, the head of the Rote organizing committee Tom Dethan voiced his appreciation to all the participants and organizers, and also his hopes that this event and those to follow will help to build tourism and the economy of Rote as well as build a stronger relationship with the international community.
Next to take the microphone was Amos Lillo from Tresna Tours, who was responsible for coordinating and managing the overall event. He thanked the government for their support and for entrusting him with the responsibility of producing the event, and was gratified that he could help be a part of making Rote an international surfing destination with the help of Tipi Jabrik and Tim Hain of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour. He also thanked his team at Tresna Tours for all their hard work.
The award ceremony followed, with the top four finalists in each of the 5 divisions receiving their winner’s checks and trophies, along with a distinctive Rotenese hats and ikat sashes from various government officials.
Finally, Deputy Regent of Rote Marthen L Saek took the stage for the official closing speech. He expressed his satisfaction with the results of the event and declared it a big success for surfing in Rote stating, “We are very pleased that our young surfing community could be part of this national and international event and learn to surf and compete according to international standards.”
“We look forward to continuing our support of this event in the future, and I would like to thank Tresna Tours for all their hard work in organizing the overall event, to the ISC for running a very professional competition, and to Billabong as a top international surfing brand for their support of our event. We hope that this event will attract more international attention and we welcome you to come back again and again,” he said in conclusion.
