With Bali settling into early dry season weather patterns and consistent swell forecasted throughout the waiting period, the Oakley Pro 2010 looks set to start Thursday morning, April 1, at Canggu Beach, Bali Indonesia. One surfer looking forward to the to the start of the event is recently signed Oakley athlete and reining Indonesian Champion Lee Wilson.
“Hopefully we will be able to get moving through the early rounds first thing in the morning on Thursday because I am frothing to get out there” stated Lee when asked about the upcoming event. “Canggu is just such a surf playground, really giving the guys the opportunity to perform and show what professional surfing in Indonesia is all about”.
Since moving back to Bali after completing school in Australia, Lee has established himself as one of the most formidable free surfing and competition acts in the region, previously winning the Indonesian Surfing Championship Series in 2007 and again last year. This competition prowess matched with a repertoire of powerhouse moves both on and far above the waves made Lee an obvious choice for Oakley when looking for a key ambassador for the brand in the region.
Marketing Director for Oakley South Pacific, Phil Ward reinforced this view. “With such a developed brand presence in Indonesia, we have been looking for some time to find the right person to help drive us forward in the region. As Oakley is relevant across so many markets and product categories it was import for us to find someone who has the ability to transcend the boundaries of just surfing. A person as talented as Lee really fits the bill- we are elated to have him on board”.
When asked about defending his title, Lee commented, “I am really looking forward to this year. While Oakley is giving me the support to chase new opportunities and projects, I have been pretty consistent in the ISC events since the inception of the series (Lee also finished runner up in 06 and again in 08) I am feeling pretty confident and in tune for the year ahead”.
For those not fortunate enough to be in Bali, Oakley have just gone live with a dedicated event mini-site to keep everyone up to date with the latest news, photos and footage.
The Oakley Pro 2010 is a 6-Star Indonesian Surfing Championship event that will be held at Canggu Beach starting on the 1st of April with a 10-day waiting period.
This is the sixth year Oakley has supported the ISC and the growth of surfing in Indonesia. Oakley has previously hosted five ISC-sanctioned competitions in Bali since 2005, two at Bingin and two at Kuta Beach. Last year saw a move to Canggu, the site of this year’s competition.
