Hawaiians Dominate Rusty Gromfest at Pererenan, Bali

Today Hawaii's Isaiah Moniz claimed victory over a highly competitive field of local and international talent at the second event of the three-part Rusty Gromfest series at Pererenan, Canggu, Bali.

Isaiah narrowly defeated local favorite Jeren Kiring in the final, held in 2-3 foot left hand wedges at the 'sandbar' bank. Jeren was surfing razor sharp but couldn't find a second wave that offered high scoring potential. Koko Mitsua and Ediana Putra finished third and fourth respectively.

"It was really close and it came down to who could pick the best waves. Fortunately for me I found a good one that linked up to the inside." said Isaiah after the final. "I want to thank the locals for sharing their waves today, it's the highlight of my trip."

In the under 14 division final it was an International affair with Seth Moniz (Isaiah's brother) taking it out over Australian Luke Hynd, local boy Prayuda, and Matshushita Ryota from Japan. Seth turned heads from the outset, securing great scoring rides in all his heats and impressing the judges with his explosive style.

The 2010 Gromfest Series ratings are heating up with Jeren Kiring edging Ediana Putra out of top spot following today's event. The overall under 16 division champion will be awarded a free, expenses paid trip to Australia to compete in the 15th annual Rusty Gromfest at Lennox Head in July 2010. The overall under 14 division winner will be presented with a tricked out Sony PSP.

This year at each junior event Coca-Cola ISC will reward the 'surfer that shows the most potential' with a new custom surfboard. Today 'Raju' from Legian was presented with the award and he was visibly stoked. He was an early round stand-out, surfing beyond his years even though he was using old equipment.

All finalists received awesome prizes in the form of Rusty clothing packs, Sony Ericsson handphones, Creatures grips and leashes, free surfboard art and repairs from Freedom surfshop, plus other products from event sponsors Sabre, Macbeth, Stomp, Zinka, and Walls.
