The 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch Season is On!

7 February 2011, Kuta-Bali:  Starting off its 8th year of searching the islands of Indonesia for the nation’s hottest groms, the Rip Curl GromSearch 2011 season will begin in West Java at the sand bottomed right hand point break of Batu Karas, located a few hours drive west of Bandung in West Java on February 20, 2011.

Boy and girl groms (young surfers under 16 years of age) from all over Java will be hopping aboard planes, trains, automobiles and motorbikes and making their way to Batu Karas in time for the fun-filled day of surfing, games, and giveaways that has become a time-honored surfing tradition at Rip Curl.

The winner and the runner up in the Under 16 year old division of each 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch will receive an all expense paid trip to compete in the GromSearch National Finals in October at Kuta Beach in Bali.  A great adventure awaits those lucky groms on what just may be their first trip ever to Bali, with a week long Grom Training Camp and then the full-on challenge of surfing against their peers and the chance to become Indonesia’s 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch Champion.

The grand prize for the National Final’s Champion at Kuta Beach is a trip to Australia in 2012 to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch World Final that is held each year at Bells Beach, truly a great honor and a great reward.  Last year’s GromSearch winner Jeren Kiring (see attached photo) has his passport ready to go and will be heading Down Under this April to take on the world’s best junior surfers at Bells Beach.

The second stop on the Rip Curl GromSearch lands the team on the wave rich shores of Kuta in South Lombok on March 20, then over to the premiere surf destination of Lakey Peak in Sumbawa on April 10th, and back to Bali and up to the long lefthand pointbreak of Medewi on September 11th, before bringing all the winning groms together for the National Final at Kuta Beach on October 8-9.

“Rip Curl is always on the Search for the best and talented surfers around the globe,” said Rip Curl’s SEA Marketing Manager James Hendy.  “The GromSearch not only gives us the chance to check out the up-coming talent from all over Indonesia but gives kids that have never competed before a taste of what it’s like in a fun, relaxed environment. The event also provides the older more experienced groms with a stepping stone towards competing at an international level with the chance of winning a place at the World GromSearch Finals held during the Rip Curl Pro Search at Bells Beach in Australia.”

There is no entrance fee for participation in Rip Curl GromSearch events, and all contestants receive a Rip Curl goody bag and Rip Curl T-shirt. They are also given instructions on environmental awareness as well as the chance to participate in interesting non-surfing games during the day.
