Indonesian Junior Surfing Team Returns From Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in New Zealand

31 January 2010, Kuta-Bali:  The Indonesian Junior Surfing Team arrived back in Bali on Friday evening the 29th of January after their first time competing in an International Surfing Association event, the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships that took place from January 20-28 in the seaside town of Piha, about an hour’s drive out of Auckland, New Zealand.

The 8 member surf team that included Jeren Kiring (Canggu-Bali), Koko Mitsu Antara (Nusa Dua-Bali), Sandi Selamat (West Java), and Ediana Putra (Nusa Lembongan) competing in the Under 16 Boys Division, and Putra Hermawan (Nusa Lembongan), Oney Anwar (Lakey Peak-Sumbawa), Putu Anggara (Nusa Lembongan), and Agus Frimanto (Nusa Lembongan) competing in the Under 18 Boys Division, departed Bali on the 18th of January to join over 200 other junior surfers representing 21 countries in New Zealand to compete for gold, silver, bronze and copper medals.  They were accompanied by Tipi Jabrik as Team Manager/Coach and Tim Hain as Assistant Manager/Media Documentation.

The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships are a yearly event but the location changes each year.  Last year’s event was held in Ecuador, South America.

On the 20thth of January, the team joined in the opening ceremony that included speeches by ISA President Fernando Aguerre, Quiksilver International CEO Bob McKnight, Surfing New Zealand’s CEO Greg Townsend, Auckland’s Mayor John Banks, and Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey, the “Parade of Flags” parade, and a “Sands of the World” ceremony where sand from Kuta Beach was mixed in with sand from the other countries beaches to symbolize the peaceful gathering of nations for the love of surfing.
Indonesia received special mention as one of the three countries that were competing in the event for the first time.  The others were Vanuatu and Fiji.

The competitive surfing action began on the morning of the 21st in testing conditions for the Indonesian team, with strong currents, cold water, and stormy conditions.  Though unused to competing in thick wetsuits, several members of the team did well, with Jeren Kiring, Ediana Putra and Putu Anggara scoring second place finishes in their first round heats. Over the next three days conditions worsened, with the bigger waves, strong winds, and frequent rain squalls making it even tougher to find good scoring waves, so despite their best efforts their run for the gold medal ended on the fourth day.

Team Manager Tipi Jabrik said, “The boys all did their best and it was the kind of experience that they needed.  They rarely surf in these kind of conditions so were unprepared to compete in these types of waves, especially against the elite teams from the big countries that have a lot more experience and training.  We will be much better prepared next year, and as this is the first time for an Indonesian team competing in such a large international event, I feel very proud to be part of getting a team here and also proud of our team.”
Rip Curl SEA CEO Jeff Anderson summed up the feeling of all the Indonesian team’s sponsors and supporters, saying, “I know the team did their best in extremely tough conditions, and know that they have learned a lot and have grown from their experience.  We are all very proud of them for their great effort, and next year we will continue to support them as they face their next challenge.”

The boys themselves were treated like celebrities, by the local Piha crew and by the other teams, so enjoyed their new adventure thoroughly.  With their local friend and supporter Nick “Chongee” Ngau-Chun as one of the MC’s during the event, they had their fair share of both attention and encouragement throughout the event.  “I love these kids and was so stoked that they made it over here.  I spend several months each year in Indonesia and have been surfing at these kids home breaks for years, so it was a dream come true to have them come over to my home break surf and surf with me here,” he said.  “I know it wasn’t an easy trip, especially trying to get funding and sorting out visa’s, but everyone put in a first class effort and made it happen.  When I met them at the airport after their long flight from and saw their tired faces light up with smiles when they saw me, it brought tears to my eyes,” he added emotionally.

Ngau-Chun together with Fiona Anderson from the Piha Domain Camp Ground arranged and sponsored the accommodations and most meals for the team during their stay in Piha, ensuring that they were well taken care of both in and out of the water. Anderson is a regular traveler to Indonesia as well, and cites Nusa Lembongan as her favorite place to visit.  "When Nick came to me to ask for help in looking for accommodations for the team, I immediately agreed to lend a hand, as I knew how hard it was for those kids to get over here...I know where they are from, and see them and their friends just about every year, so it was a great opportunity to help out.  Myself and my crew here had such such a great time hosting those kids here at the campground, I wish we could do it every year!" she said smiling.
So overall it was an excellent effort and a great experience for the team, placing 16th overall out of the 21 teams participating. And this event’s experience behind them, and the news that next year’s event will be held in a more tropical location with warm water, expect the team to go much farther in 2011.  Hopefully there will be four Indonesian girl surfers who can also join in next year’s event, helping to boost the overall team score and increase their ranking position.

During the remainder of the event, the team did some free surfing in the epic surfing location of Raglan, as well as exploring in the city of Auckland before returning to witness the finals of the surfing competition and then participating in the closing ceremony, where Team Australia claimed their 5th consecutive team gold medal in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, while France had to settle for the silver, and South Africa narrowly edged out Hawaii for the bronze.  All the details of the final placings in all divisions can be seen at www.isaworldjuniors.com.

The attendance of the Indonesian Junior Team would not have been possible without the support, funding and generosity of Billabong Asia, Hurley, Oakley Indonesia, Quiksilver Asia, Rip Curl Asia, and Rusty Asia, Coca-Cola Bottling Indonesia and the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour, KDBJ Tours and Travel, Nick “Chongee” Ngau-Chun, Fiona Anderson at the Piha Domain Camp Ground and Ben Kennings of Surfing New Zealand.

I love sunday

Meet my friends at MOI, we did karaoke at Lollipop, then watched Legion at La Piazza. I just knew that there is karaoke place in MOI, I thought there were only NAV, Inul Vista, and Happy Puppy near by Boulevard street. The room was good, the price was cheap enought (50000 IDR for 2 hours), but...lack of new songs, they should add more, hehehe.

Daly, Tyas, Hanifah and Me

After had karaoke, we watched Legion movie. It was about angel Michael, God, angel Gabriel, baby born whom could save human nature, and zombie. Actually I didn't understand the movie, but after I read the synopsis just a minute ago, now I can figure it out. Hehehe, how stupid me.

Ahh..why sunday leave so fast? I need more holiday :)

Piha Quiksilver World Junior Update

Oney Anwar and Putu Anggara Keep Indonesia’s Under 18 Division Hopes Alive at the ISA Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships

23 January 2010, Piha – New Zealand: After another day of very challenging surfing conditions at Piha Beach in New Zealand, Oney Anwar’s 2nd place finish in the last heat of the day kept the Indonesian Team’s Under 18 Division hopes alive.  He will now join Putu Anggara to surf in Repercharge 2, estimated to run on Monday the 24th, in hopes of gaining entrance into Qualifying Round 3

Agus Frimanto and Putra Hermawan both failed to advance in their Repercharge 1 heats today, finishing in 3rd place, so are now out of the competition.  “I’m really disappointed that I didn’t make it through today and let down my team.  I tried my best out there and would have made it if I could have found the right wave.  But it was so hard to be in the right place at the right time,” said Hermawan after his heat.  “So now my place will be supporting my team mates, back here on the beach,” he added.

Oney Anwar was full of confidence before his heat saying, “I’m going to get out there and find one of those good waves, and win this heat.  I know what I have to do and there is no way I’m not going to do it.”

He then paddled out for the 25-minute heat and locked into second spot by picking off a solid lefthander, following Francisco Alves (Portugal) who had nailed the first wave of the heat to jump into the lead.  Anwar then held off the charge of Sebastian Hurtado (Ecuador) with a couple more waves to finish with his and his team’s hopes still intact.

After his heat he said, “I didn’t get that really good wave that I wanted out there, but I did the best with what I got, so even though I didn’t win the heat like I wanted to I’m satisfied with second place. Our team’s chances are still alive, and I’m going to do my part to make sure I win the rest of my heats.”

Tomorrow will see the Girls Division and Repercharge 1 of the Under 16 Boys Division take to the water, where all of the Under 16 Indonesian boys will be competing in tomorrow’s Repercharge 1, as both Ediana Putra and Jeren Kiring failed to place in the top two spots in their Qualifying Round Two heats today. Putra finished in 4th place in his heat and and Kiring finished 3rd in his.

Hopefully conditions will continue to improve here in Piha tomorrow and give the boys a better opportunity to show off their surfing skills, and a little sunshine would certainly help out.

Brutal Condition in Piha...

Brutal Conditions Face Indonesian Team on Day Two of ISA Quiksilver Junior World Surfing Championships

21 January 2010, Piha – New Zealand: In conditions that Team Coach Tipi Jabrik said “nobody would ever surf in unless there was a contest on”, thankfully only one member of the Indonesian team had to paddle out and do battle with the brutal elements on Day Two of the ISA Quiksilver Junior World Surfing Championships.

The incessant and howling offshore winds were joined by frequent rain squalls to make conditions on the beach quite unfriendly, not to mention what was happening out in the ocean.  4-6 foot storm surf with raging rips resulted in a 15-minute paddle out time and 25 minute heats for the 9 heats of the Under 18 qualifying Round Two.

Due to the conditions and the anticipation of a break in the weather on Saturday, the organizers decided to have an abbreviated day of competition and allow just the more seasoned of the athletes to test themselves against the extreme conditions, therefore the lucky top surfers from the previous day’s Qualifying Round One including Tim McDonald (AUS), Keanu Asing (HAW), Gabriel Medina (BRA), Tamaroa McComb (TAH) and Indonesia’s Putu Anggara were called back into action instead of running the repercharge rounds in both the Under 16 and Under 18 Divisions as anticipated.

Despite having the expert local knowledge and tutelage of Nick Ngau-Chun at his disposal before his heat, Anggara was unable to repeat his solid performance of the day before and failed to catch any waves during his allotted 25 minutes.  “It was so hard to know which waves to even paddle for out there, and with the strong currents and the wind I couldn’t get in a good position at the right time, the waves were breaking all over the place.  I couldn’t even hear the horn at the end of my heat, and so the jetski had to come out and give me a ride in.  I’m bummed I let down the team today, but I’ll do better next chance I get for sure,” said Anggara after his heat.

After the contest was called off for the day, the team was treated to a trip into Auckland to search for some Indonesian food in consolation for their tough day.  Fiona Anderson arranged a van with her son Luke as the driver and everyone piled in for the drive.  After a bit of searching around, luck was with the team and they happened upon an Indonesian couple from Jakarta who directed them to Warung Wardani, where they gorged themselves with Nasi Ayam, Satay Ayam, Nasi Padang, and Mie Goreng and just about cleaned out the place.  While there they met up with Kadek Henk from Kuta, who has been living in Auckland for about four years now, so it was a great reunion and a great end to the day.

Conditions are expected to improve throughout the next few days, so everyone is really looking forward to that.

Indonesia’s Junior Surf Team Completes First Round in Piha

Indonesia’s Junior Surf Team Completes First Qualifying Round at ISA Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships

21 January 2010, Piha – New Zealand:  With the first day of competition at the ISA Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships, three of the eight Indonesian junior surfers advanced directly into Round 3, while the remaining five will surf in Round 2 tomorrow in hopes of joining their teammates in Round 3.

In the Under 16 Division, Jeren Kiring and Ediana Putra both put on impressive displays of surfing in the very testing conditions to nab 2nd places finishes and avoid a Round 2 elimination possibility, while Putu Anggara did the same in the Under 18 Division to advance to Round 3.

“It was really hard out there, because the waves were all over the place,” said Putu Anggara after his heat.  “I was lucky to get a nice righthander that walled up so I could do a couple of turns.   I had no idea about my score because the wind was so strong I could only hear the final horn.  My other waves weren’t very good so I was surprised when I found out I got 2nd,” he added with a grin.

Jeren had a similar opinion about the day’s surfing.  “I was so happy when I heard I got second, because I didn’t hear anything out in the water.  Between paddling all the time with the wind blowing and then duckdiving, I was pretty busy out there,” he said.

Against a field of the top Junior surfers in the world, and entering such a huge international competition for the first time, it is difficult not to agree that it was a great day for surfing for the young Indonesian team, seeing as they had to battle not only the initial hurdles of money, visa’s and logistics just to get to New Zealand, but once here face the stiff competition of the much more experienced juniors from countries such as Australia, Hawaii, Brazil, and the USA coupled with the cold water, strong currents, and gale-force winds.  Not to mention the time difference, which results in the team getting up each morning at 5 hours earlier than at home…about 1:30 am!

Coach Tipi Jabrik was very pleased with the results of his team today, saying “Considering that Indonesia has the lowest seeding, since this is our first time competing in this event, we did really good to get 3 of our boys into 2nd place finishes.  In each heat we were up against the top boys from Hawaii, the USA, and Brazil, and though our boys have a lot of talent they don’t have heaps of experience, so I’m very satisfied with how we did today.  If the wave conditions improve we will do even better tomorrow, as the boys know now what they are up against.”

Having the most contest experience of the Indonesian Team still wasn’t enough to get Oney Anwar a heat win or even a second place finish.  He was disappointed but by no means discouraged, saying “With the strong current out there and the waves breaking all over the place, it was tough to get a high scoring wave.  I saw that the left had the best wall on it, but it wasn’t very consistent.  I kept waiting and paddling to stay in position, and then I thought I saw a good but it ended up going fat on me so I got a pretty low score.  Then it was a long paddle back out against the current and I just couldn’t get anything good happening before time ran out.”   He finished last in his heat but is optimistic about tomorrow.  “I know I can put up some high scores, so am looking at today as a learning experience.  I’ll be out there early in the morning getting some practice in and checking out the lineup, so I’m confident I’ll have a better heat tomorrow,” he added.

Thanks to the generous locals at Piha, especially Nick Gnu-Chun and Fiona Anderson of the Paha Domain Motor Camp, the Indonesian Junior Team are being well looked after with accommodations, food and more, and as this is the first time they are competing together in such a huge international event, it will be a trip they will never forget. “The people here are so nice and treat us so special, it’s really amazing”, said Koko.  “All the competitors from all over the world are here and we even met some of them that have been to Bali.  They say ‘apa kabar’ to us each time we meet them.  It’s great to be here!”

After their over-12-hour-trip from Bali to Auckland via Sydney, the boys all attended the opening festivities in Auckland which included a parade and the “Sands of the World” ceremony where the sand they brought from Kula Beach was mixed in with the sand from all the other countries that are competing in the event.

Prior to their departure, the Junior team spend a couple of days with Coach Tipi first at Keramas and then at Pererenan beaches, getting in some last minute training and tips in preparation for their trip.  Tipi ran the kids through some practice heats so he could analyze their wave selection, repertoire and execution of the maneuvers, in addition to competition tactics, strategy, and fitness for the colder water of New Zealand.

The final day was spend at their sponsor’s offices getting last minute paperwork sorted and making sure they had the right variety of cold water gear for both in and out of the water, before heading off to the Ngurah Rai Airport.

The event will be officially open on January 20, after the Parade of Nations and Sands of the World Ceremony. The opening ceremony will take place at Mission Bay in Auckland at 1pm, and the actual Competition will start at 8:00am on the 21st at Piha Beach.

We will be posting our own reports in addition to forwarding the official ISA reports each day.  Check out our Facebook Indonesian Surfing Championships site as well as our website www.isctour.com, and for live action www.isaworldjuniors.com.

Road Riding : Day 2

Semangaaaat paaagiiii!
Just sharing my valuable experience in second road riding, happy reading!

Monday, January 18th 2010
At this time, I was located in Pondok Ungu Sales Center, together with Widya, Brigas, and Ricky. It was time for delivery. After salesman had ordered last friday (see my last post), delivery man distributed products on monday.

I accompanied Bapak Harno as a delivery man and Bapak Gino as a helper. They were very kind, funny, hard working and very javannese, hehehe. Bapak Harno has been doing this job for 14 years, he has 1 son (he told me that his son, in elementary school, prefered buy parfumme than ice cream, ck ck.. anak jaman sekarang), and he missed his family at village. Then, Bapak Gino has been doing this job for 1 year and he has 1 daughter.

Bapak Harno and Bapak Gino

Our distribution area were arround Kranji, Taman Galaxy, Jatibening, Bintara, and Jaka Sampurna. There were 28 outlets that we should distribute. Before we went to outlets, we had checked the truck and the amount of product.

Truck : front view, hmmm..nothing interesting

Truck : Back view, aw aw aw, there is my boy friend, ello :)

What did they do in each outlet?
Of course, they must deliver the product and get the money. But, not every outlet took all what they have ordered, maybe because they didn't have the money, there were no person in charge, or they never order before.

Bapak Gino worked so hard

By the way, this is me drove the truck, lol.
