Padang Padang - Rip Curl Cup 2011

Padang Padang, Bali – In one week, 32 of the world's best tube riders will gather in Bali in preparation for Indonesia's most prestigious surf contest. The opening ceremony for the 2011 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang will be held at Padang Padang beach on July 10th, and marks the first day of the five-week event waiting period.

The Rip Curl Cup has produced some of the most unforgettable surfing moments in recent memory. In 2005, it was local surfers Rizal Tanjung and Bol trading smoking Padang pits until the dying seconds of the final. In 2007, the first time international surfers were invited to compete, it was a pre-teen John Florence surfing against guys twice his age and standing tall in gaping barrels. In 2009, it was Jamie O'Brien's masterful performance at Padang, when he scored four perfect 10s and a prefect heat to claim the Cup. This season the focus of the surfing world will again turn to Bali to see what new surfing history is made during the 2011 Padang Cup.

“When I was a young surfer, Padang Cup was always my favorite contest of the year,” first-time invitee and current ISC champion Putra Hermawan said. “I waited all year to watch the best guys surf against each other at Padang. Now I get to be in the contest. So many amazing heats have happened in this event over the years, it's an honor just to be invited.”
Last year the waves at Padang never reached the world-class caliber required to hold the “Ultimate Tuberiding Contest.” Expectations for this year's contest are even higher. “I can't wait,” said Brazilian invitee Bruno Santos. “Last year some really good waves came through at Padang but they held off on running the contest. So you know when they run it this year the waves will be going off.”

Rip Curl has extended the contest waiting period to five weeks, beginning July 10th and running through Aug. 14th, to ensure catching a contest-worthy swell. The stakes will be higher as well, with a $10,000 prize purse.
Among the 16 international surfers confirmed to compete are Chris Ward (California), Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Ry Craike (Australia), Laurie Towner (Australia) and Dean Morrison (Australia). Indonesia will be represented by two-time Rip Curl Cup champion Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Rizal Tanjung, Marlon Gerber, Garut Widiarta, Dede Suryana and Lee Wilson, among others. The complete list of 32 invitees will be released next week.

This year, you don't have to be in Bali to see the best barrel-riding show of the year. Padang Cup fans around the world can view “Heats On-Demand” on the contest website minutes after they go down. You can also check the website for in-depth interviews with all the invited surfers and daily video features on all the hottest surfing and parties happening in Bali during the waiting period. Buy your Rip Curl Cup T-shirt and help protect Bali's waves
Every year the Padang Cup T-shirt is one of Rip Curl's most popular items. This year, when you buy your official event T-shirt, you are also helping to protect the waves at world-famous Uluwatu and Padang Padang. For every event T-shirt sold, Rip Curl will contribute 50,000 IDR (or $5 USD) to Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu, the environmental organization creating sustainable waste management solutions for Uluwatu beach.

About the Rip Curl Cup
Now in its eighth year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best. In 2011, Rip Curl continues to infuse the contest with international flavor and big names. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time greatest and 16 of the world’s best tube slayers. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indo surf season.
Rip Curl has set aside a five-week waiting period to hold the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year's window will run from July 10th through Aug. 14th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.
