Coca-Cola ISC Tour Adds Mentawai Surfing Competition to 2011 Schedule of Events

31 March 2011, Kuta-Bali:  The Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour is delighted to announce the addition of the Mentawai Surf Competition 2011 to this year’s ISC Tour calendar.  The event will be held from the 22nd-26th of June in North Sipora at the surf breaks known as Telescopes and Ice Land.  Initiated and sponsored by the Mentawai Islands Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth, and Sports, this will be the first ever 6-star ISC event to be held in the Mentawai Islands, which are known throughout the world as THE Mecca of surfing.

Coca-Cola ISC Tour CEO Tipi Jabrik couldn’t be happier with this last minute addition to the 2011 tour season, stating “Every surfer’s dream is to go to the Mentawai Islands, and now we get to bring the best surfers in Indonesia to compete there as part of our Indonesia Surfing Championship circuit. We are all very excited about the event for many reasons, not only for the surfing contest itself but because it is proof of our progress in growing the sport of surfing in Indonesia.  The waves of Indonesia are one of the biggest natural resources we have, and its rewarding to see that the more and more of the provincial governments of Indonesia are beginning to recognize this fact and help us in our efforts.”

The 6 star ISC surfing competition will include three divisions, Open, Masters, and Womens, with a total prize purse of over Rp 60 million and will take place over a five day period in order to ensure that the surfers get to compete when the waves conditions are the most optimum.

The Mentawai Islands were hit with an earthquake and tsunami back in October of 2010, which though it didn’t have a lasting effect on the surfing scene there, it did have a serious effect on thousands of the Mentawai people.  The Mentawai Surfing Competition 2011 is part of the provincial government’s efforts to both sustain the growth of surf tourism and to develop the islands for cultural and eco-friendly tourism.  According to Ibu Desti, “We are pleased to launch this surfing competition with the help of the ISC, not only to promote surf tourism and to rebuild the image of the area after the earthquake but also to promote the people of the islands themselves. They are known to be one of the world’s most fascinating and best preserved indigenous cultures, making the Mentawais an exclusively unique travel destination.”

So it looks like the ISC surfers and crew will not only be surfing and competing in the world-class waves of the Mentawais, they will also be seeing a new culture, meeting new people, and gaining new and valuable life experiences in this beautiful part of Indonesia.
