Coffin on Cake's Dean Bennett was invited to speak on BBC Radio 5 Live last week, being interviewed exclusively during a debate on the Five Live Drive show with Peter Allen, broadcast to more than five million listeners across the UK. Dean was asked to voice his opinions on the validity of non-traditional degrees versus traditional subjects with the infamous BSc Surf Science & Technology degree unduly under the media spotlight again.
Speaking live Dean commented "I think the name of the course makes it an easy target for critics who seem fascinated with tired surf clichés - It's not a degree in surfing, it's a rigorous science degree based on a multi billion dollar global industry. The course modules range from Oceanography and Human Biology, to Marine Technology and Business Management allowing huge numbers of graduates to develop careers within the industry".
Following the three minute live interview huge numbers of callers contacted the show in support of Bennett's comments saying "I'd like to send my congratulations and support to Dean, I completed an engineering degree and only one of thirty five people who completed the course have managed to go onto pursue a career in the field'.
Since its launch in 1999, the unique BSc Honours Degree in Surf Science & Technology has attracted unprecedented interest from across the world, with applications from prospective students far exceeding the number of places available.
