The Global Forum for Sport and the Environment conference (G-ForSE), sponsored by Volvo and organised by the United Nations Environment Programme and Global Sports Alliance, took place in Alicante, Spain last weekend.
BLUE Ambassadors, Conrad Humphreys and Jose Luengo joined 200 other international delegates that included governing sporting bodies, Olympic host city representatives, sport organisations and event organisers at the three day conference, which coincided with the start of the first In-Shore race for the Volvo Ocean Race.
Representing the BLUE® Climate and Oceans Project, Conrad delivered an inspiring and thought provoking presentation to the conference delegates about how sport has the ability to achieve much more than just awareness, by engaging people in environmental issues and evoking action.
Speaking about the conference, Conrad comments: "The UNEP G-ForSE conference was a great insight and helped us to gain a better understanding of how the major sports governing bodies are adapting to the challenges and threats posed by climate change.
"There are many sports that are taking initiatives on waste, water and energy and I hope that one of the outcomes from the conference is that the lead organisations can share their best practices with the smaller sports bodies.
"What is clear, is that everyone in the sport industry should use their business relations to influence other partners to adopt some minimum standards. The first step to reducing your impact is an understanding of how to manage your carbon footprint. The opportunities for Sport are vast and I'm confident that we can use the powerful image of sport to inspire and motivate people to reduce their impact on the environment".
